Glenda and Rick Prokopavicius
My fascination with people began when I followed my brother’s footsteps into a career in hairdressing when I was 15.
I loved every aspect of this creative industry which varied depending on salon or city I was working.
At 20, I left Christchurch on the first stage of my overseas experience...but shortly after met Rick , my husband, so decided to live in Melbourne where I started my own salon.
Rick & I had a strong desire to return to New Zealand after our first son was born to establish our family life in Christchurch & Rick,a pushover to convince, as this was “the place” for any totally obsessive fly-fisher , became self- employed in the Architectural business .
Rick is born of Lithuanian mother & Latvian father, who emigrated in 1952 to Australia being one of few countries to accept families with 3 children.
After our 3rd son was born I became a “Stay at home” Mum.
My interests changed to activities revolved around my family’s, so when the Yacht Club needed someone to create a program that would rejuvenate & inspire juniors, I had the time to volunteer & delighted at the challenge of making something exciting happen.
Maybe this was the time in my life when my cog shifted a knotch, life making clear to me when the focus comes off yourself onto someone else’s pleasure, the reward is even sweeter.
9 years I created Optimist Live-in training camps, bringing junior sailors from the South Island together for 5 days of fun & extending themselves in many areas as well as sailing.
"The first female Commodore of the Christchurch Yacht Club.......
The demands of this voluntary position took me into becoming the first female Commodore of the Christchurch Yacht Club, sailing since 1891, – my next challenge for a sport that was not my own personal passion.
Our 3 boys, have sailed from Optimists through different classes, Saul now sailing a Finn & Luke & Jesse sailing for a living on SuperYachts travelling the world.
While the boys were teenagers we became host family for many international students learning English in Christchurch, resulting in a busy, exciting few years.
We enjoy good food...
so hosting overseas tourists, picking them up from their hotel to bring them home for a “Kiwi” dinner, is another way that truly “makes our day”!
Rick loves his leisure by sailing his Zephyr yacht & combining with flyfishing, my leisure had been jogging, swimming & biking and yoga.
2 years ago, I challenged myself, trained & overcame the fear to become a Padi certified Diver & allowed the focus of my next holidays diving in Thailand & Great Barrier Reef.
My rule of thumb, to only dive in warm waters...
which means I design exotic locations for my holidays –a contrast to Rick’s utopia!
Our Bed & Breakfast decision seemed to be natural after the boys left home, to share our comfortable home, enjoy each others company & make someone else’s holiday more special from our hospitality.
